AVP/Counsel – Federal & Political Affairs

The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) has an opening in its Washington D.C. office. This position will represent NAMIC before federal officials on issues affecting p/c insurance companies, and advocate legislative, legal and regulatory positions developed by NAMIC in the appropriate forums. Draft legislative and regulatory language and assist in developing legislative and regulatory policy of NAMIC.

Essential Functions:

  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with federal regulatory agencies and advisory bodies to include FIO, FACI, the Federal Reserve Board, CFPB, SEC, FTC, CFTC, NHTSA, DOL, and FEMA.
  • Provides legislative, legal, and regulatory analysis on issues affecting the p/c industry.
  • Recommends strategies to achieve desired outcomes for legislation and regulation affecting the p/c industry at the federal level.
  • Identifies and analyzes all proposed federal rules and notices pertaining to the p/c industry.
  • In coordination with the General Counsel – Federal, manages NAMIC testimony and comment letters regarding Federal legislative and regulatory proposals. 
  • Maintains regular communications with other DC member company, insurance trade representatives, and other relevant stakeholder groups.
  • Works closely with NAMIC Public Policy Team to ensure comprehensive issue coverage and coordination between Public Policy SME’s and Federal & Political Affairs advocates.
  • Provides direct advocacy coverage and testimony for legislative/regulatory entities as needed.

Qualifications

  • 15 years of relevant work experience on Capitol Hill, with a federal regulatory agency or the equivalent in the private sector.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Law degree required.
  • Familiarity with relevant federal regulatory agencies.
  • Familiarity with major Congressional committees of jurisdiction preferred.
  • Experience responding to federal regulatory rulemaking and the Administrative Procedures Act preferred.
  • Understanding of property/casualty insurance issues a plus.
  • Ability to travel as required periodically.
  • Clear criminal record and MVR.
